EFFECTS OF THE CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE CHAN FU RANG ON HEMOROLOGY IN DAIRY COWS WITH QI DEFFICIENCY AND BLOOD STASIS
The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of activating blood circulation to dissipate Blood stasis of the Chinese herbal medicine Chan Fu Kang. Fifty-eight postpartum dairy cows were divided into two groups: Qi Deficiency and Blood Stasis (QDBS) group (n=24) and no clinical abnormal (NCA) group (n=34) based on clinical physical examination. Both groups were furthermore divided into treatment and control subgroups: A) QDBS-herbal treatment (n=16), B) QDBS-no treatment (control) (n=8), C) NCAherbal treatment (n=16) and D) NCA-no treatment (control) (n=18). The herbal Chan Fu Kang was orally administered to the cows of groups A and C in the dose of 0.5g/kg and 0.4g/kg for 5 days respectively. The results showed that whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation index of these 58 postpartum dairy cows were increased significantly as compared with ones of their antepartum period, but the erythrocyte deformation index was decreased significantly. Of 58 postpartum cows, 24 (41.4%) were identified with Qi Deficiency and Blood Stasis. These postpartum cows with QDBS had even a higher level of whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, but a lower level of the erythrocyte deformation index than the postpartum cows of NCA group. After the herbal treatment, all hemorheology indexes declined significantly in DVBS-herbal treatment group, but the indexes in QDBS-control group were still higher than those of the healthy cows.
