THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF CANINE INTERVERTEBRAL DISC DISEASES (IVDD) WITH A COMBINATION OF ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE AND DRUGS
Intervertebral disc herniation occurs due to the degeneration or deformation of the intervertebral disc. This leads to bulging of the annul us fibrosus of the disc, which may then rupture, allowing the nucleus gelatinosus to hemiate dorsally. This spinal disease can cause compression of the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots. It is characterized by sensory and motor deficits in the hindquarters. Clinically, it is very common in small animals, especially small dogs. In the west, the treatment of canine intervertebral disc herniation is mainly surgical or combined with medications. In China, treatment is mostly conservative, with injection of Western medical drugs. Clinical practice has shown that a combination of acupuncture and drugs have a good effect in intervertebral disc herniation of small animals, particularly dogs.
