CANINE AND FELINE UROLITHS TREATMENT WITH CHINESE HERBAL SUPPLEMENT CRYSTACLAIR

Background: Urolith stones are common in dogs and cats: however, effective medical protocols for dissolution of these stones are lacking. Herbal supplements have not been fully evaluated for their ability to dissolve uroliths in evidenced-based studies. Objective: To obtain valuable information for dissolution of uroliths using an herbal supplement called CrystaClair. Animals: Forty-six animals consisting of thirteen cats and thirty-three dogs of which thirty-one were female and fifteen were males. The ages of the animals ranged from six months to thirteen years. Nine of the cats were female and four were male. Cats ranged in age from six months to eleven years at time of presentation. Methods: clinical study. All patients were put on the herbal supplement, CrystaClair without any other drugs. Some patients received diet change, some did not. All patients had pretreatment radiographs and were followed by radiographs for up to a year to evaluate the efficacy of the CrystaClair. Results: Urolith stones were dissolved in twenty-six of forty-six patients (56.5%). Two of twenty-six cases had had previous surgery to remove stones which were analyzed and determined to be calcium oxalate. Current urinalyses in these patients revealed Cal Ox crystals. Twenty patients (43.5%) did not have complete dissolution of the uroliths. Of all the forty-six patients, thirty cases had diet changes, sixteen cases did not. There was not any significant difference between the diet changed group and nondiet changed group in regards to the dissolution of uroliths (P>0.5563). Conclusions and clinical importance: CrystaClair is effective in dissolution of uroliths and it provides an alternative to surgery and diet change.
