LUMBAR DISEASE AND LAMENESS IN THE HORSE
Lameness may be due to disease of the lumbar region of the spine or limb disorders. Lumbar problems can be classified as traumatic or involving invasion of pathogenic Cold. The incidence of lumbar disease is 3-5%, and the cure rate is 92% for cases treated early. Limb problems that cause lameness include pain from joints such as the hip, stifle or fetlock, scapular pain, bone spavin and flexor tendon problems. There is a high incidence, about 15-20%, of this type of problem in racing and other performance horses. The cure rate can be up to 94% for cases treated early, and about 60-70% for more chronic cases.
