ACUPUNCTURE FOR TREATING CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DISORDERS OF THE EQUINE LOWER AIRWAY
Respiratory disease is one of the most common health problems in veterinary medicine. It affects animals at all ages, all breeds, and all physiological states. Severity of a respiratory disease depends on several factors including an animals age, immunological status, and the cause of the disease. Animals such as horses and greyhound dogs kept for recreational sports are unable to participate in their routine training programs during sickness. Additionally, a decrease in their maximal performance capability due to an imperfect recovery is commonly seen in severe cases of respiratory disease. The development of other pulmonary disease-associated complications such as pleuropneumonia, pleuritis, emphysema, and fibrosis are increased if an appropriate treatment is delayed. Several pathologies have been identified and demonstrated to cause an increase in airway resistance and to limit the normal airflow. Among all of those pathologies, the inflammatory airway disease (IAD), heaves or recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), and summer pasture associated obstructive pulmonary disease (SPAOPD) are the most common pathologies that lead to an increase in the resistance of the lower airway.
