Hearing sensitivity on weak signal

Two-states systems are ubiquitous in nature and many of them are connected networks. An example is the hearing system which consists of cells in a scale free network and can be considered as two-state signaling devices. We here report some recent results on this system by coupled oscillators theory. We find that (I) there is a double stochastic resonance phenomenon, i.e.. resonance on both coupling strength and noise strength: (2) The favorite detection depends not only on the coupling and noise strengthen but also on the frequency of the external signal; (3) A one-body theory can be used to explain the behavior of the gain in the whole coupling strength region. These findings arc useful in understanding the high sensitivity of animals visual and auditory systems to weak external signals.
