Detection of periodic motions of visually obscured human beings using UWB radar
Detection of visually obscured human beings has many important applications in security and surveillance operations. One significant characteristic of human beings is the periodic motion, such as respiration and movement of arms. In this study, we apply the ultra wideband pulse radar for through-wall detection. We present a method based on the FFT to detect periodic motions using the UWB Radar for cross-range radar data. In particular, we extract the frequency of the periodic motion, the size and position of the human being from the UWB radar images. Comparing to the existing methods in the literature, the hardware requirement is much less and the method is more effective and simple to implement. It is straightforward to use the method in other applications such as earthquake and fire rescue.
