Sedimentary provenance studies using magnetic parameters: a case study of Chuan river section at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River
Through systematic sampling on Chuan River section at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, providing magnetic measurements in order to carry out the magnetic diagnosis method of quantitative analysis on the composition of sedimentary provenance in the Yangtze River and its tributaries, we have analyzed magnetic characteristics of these sediments, and further achieved sedimentary provenance study on magnetic materials. The results show that: (1) In Chuan River section at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the inflow of tributaries has a little contribution on magnetic materials of the main streams sediments. The contribution of Min River, Tuo River, Chishui River, Jialing River and Wu River accounts for 1.7%, 6.8%, 6.6%, 10.5% and 9.9%. (2) For the Yibin section of the Yangtze River, in contrast to Min River, the inflow of Jinsha River shows a greater contribution on magnetic minerals of the main streams sediments. The contribution of Jinsha River and Min River is respectively 98.3% and 1.7%. (3) Comparing Chuan River section and Jinsha River section of the Yangtze River with the main tributaries, we find that these sedimentary samples in Chuan River section are quite similar to those of Jinsha River section on magnetic parameters. This result implies that magnetic materials of sediments in Chuan River section mainly derive from the upper reaches of Jinsha River.(4) The results suggest that using magnetic diagnosis method of composition on the magnetic materials of sediments we can have a marked effect at constraining sedimentary provenance in river systems, provenance of which is relatively simple.
