Scenarios for applying RFID technology in construction project management
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been widely applied in our daily life and businesses such as retail, electronic transaction, logistic and supply chain management, scientific research, security, etc. It has brought about great benefits by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of above processes. However, widespread applications of RFID in the construction industry have not taken place although its potentials have long been recognised. One possible reason is that practitioners have not been fully informed of the potential uses of RFID technology. The aim of this research is to identify and visualise scenarios that describe the various uses of RFID technology in construction project management (CPM). This research starts from a review of existing literature on the RFID technology and its applications in various industrial sectors. A comprehensive portfolio of RFID applications was produced as a result through organising workshops with CPM practitioners. The research encourages the industry to widely adopt the RFID technology which has great potentials to improve current PM practice and its performance. It provides academia with a new platform for further exploring the applications of RFID technology, overcoming its technical and economical hurdles.
