How integrated are multiple Management Systems? An empirical study of construction firms in China
Integrated management system (IMS) is becoming more and more important, but experiences may differ across different firms. The objective of this paper is to analyze the extent to which quality, environmental and occupational health and safety are really integrated in construction firms in China. The research is based on a survey of 180 construction firms in China, which were registered to, at a minimum, both the ISO 9001: 2000 and ISO 14001: 2004 standards. From the results obtained we conclude that there are a great number of construction firms (55% of the sample) which had already integrated their management systems (MSs) at various levels. The former study did not pay attention to the difference between project-based and non-project-based organization. Therefore, from a project-based point of view, this paper is to provide an empirical response to how integrated are multiple MSs in Chinese construction firm, both in the parent and project organization.
