Optimal Repair-replace Strategy for Products Sold Under Warranty
When a repairable product fails during the warranty period sold with a free repair-replace warranty (FRW), the manufacturer has the option of rectifying a failure by either repairing the failed item or replacing it with a new one. The rectification action influences the warranty cost. Some failed products sometimes cant be repaired or not worthy of repair, and can only be replaced. The failed products can be reused in some ways. Considering the above factors, this paper investigates a servicing strategy involving splitting the warranty period into two distinct intervals where replacements and then repairs are performed to reduce the expected warranty cost for the manufacturer. The common minimal repair and imperfect repair are discussed in this paper. The model is analyzed to obtain the optimal repair strategy for FRW. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the application of the proposed model. The results show the model is practical and can provide decision support for warranty servicing.
