Hydration and Hardening of Cement Mixed with Latex Film-Coated Rice Straws
Four kinds of polymer latexes were used to treat the surface of rice straws. The water absorption of original rice straws and the treated rice straws was compared. The changes in mechanical strength and hydration heat of the rice straws-mixed cement were investigated. The hydration process and interface structure of the rice straws-mixed cement were analyzed by TG-DSC, SEM, etc. The results showed that, compared with original rice straws, filmforming treatment with polymer latex could effectively block the water absorption of rice straws, thereby increase the mechanical strength of hardening paste of the rice straws-mixed cement. When using modified styrene-acrylic latex to film rice straws, the water absorption at 30 min of the straws decreased by 115.4%. The compressive strength of the cement specimens mixed with 5% mass fraction of latex film-coated rice straws at 3 d, 7 d and 28 d increased by 159%, 129% and 167%, respectively. The results also showed that, compared with the cement samples without straws, the doping with either original rice straws or latex film-coated rice straws will all reduce the mechanical strength of cement. However, compared with the significant reduction in compressive strength, the effect of the doping with rice straws on the flexural strength of the cement is relatively small.
