Assessment and Study on Energy Efficiency of PCM Pavement Deicing Material System
PCM Pavement Deicing Material System (PDMS) is a composite thermal function material that combines PCM (Phase Change Material) application and pavement heat-deicing technologies. PCM features of phase change enable slow energy release of heat sources, thus resulting in small difference between the internal and external temperature of the pavement structure, gentle variation of internal temperature, evenly distributed temperature field, improved PDMS heat-storage capacity and thermal inertia, and reduced operating power consumption. In this article, theoretical analysis, experimental verification, and calculation are used to discuss how the PCM material system can slow the energy release and how efficiently it controls the temperature and saves electricity. Study has revealed that: the difference between the internal and external temperature of the PCM deicing material system is less than 30°C; ideal thermal stability delivers the highest surface temperature and considerable deicing efficiency under the same input power of heat source; and the internal temperature increase/decrease rate is only l/3~l/4 of that of the heating cable system, saving electricity by about 30%.
