IMPLEMENTING EUROPEAN STUDIO DESIGN PRACTICE WITH BOAT DESIGN AT NUST
This paper reports on a one week European studio design experience with Chinese Industrial Design students at Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NUST) in April 2009. This followed a two week studio design exchange to Zhejiang University of Media and Communication (ZUMC), which informed the teaching engagement at NUST. The Industrial Design students at NUST had experience of speed boat design, so to further their design learning and engage them in user centred design, contextu-alised to Chinese culture, they were asked to design a 10 m sailing yacht for the Chinese market. To motivate the students engagement with the brief, they were asked to form a company in groups of 6, as part of this process they had to create a brand image and design a logo. This activity required them to understand the market sector, the aspirations and expectations of their customers. They were taught the fundamental principles of yacht design and user scenarios. The students then worked in their groups in the creative forum that is European studio design practice, with a studio manager (lecturer) regularly moving between groups to discuss and technically resolve their creative proposals. The groups were then tasked with combining their ideas into a final design for the group, by a process of negotiation. The detailed design concept of the final design was then produced in CAD with each group member being allocated a specific task. The students had to present the final design as a group presentation, showing research, user scenario and benchmarking. Due to their enthusiasm for the project, the students gave excellent presentations and produced a high calibre CAD work by committing long hours to the project, in addition to those timetabled. This teaching exchange proved the potential of European studio design practice as a method for engaging Chinese Industrial Design students in a creative learning process; it was viewed by both staff and students at NUST as a great success.
