Investigations of the effective mass diffusivity in a multiphase porous medium with a lattice Boltzmann method

A new mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann algorithm is proposed to predict the mass diffusivity in a porous medium of complex structure at the pore scale. By using the reconstruction technology for porous media, the diffusion mass transfer process in various porous media is studied. The concentration distribution as well as the effective mass diffusivity inside such a complex structure is obtained, without resorting to any empirical parameters determined case by case. Furthermore, the influence of the granular fraction to the effective mass diffusivity as well as the mechanism of this influence is discussed. The calculated effective mass diffusivities are also compared with the Maxwell equation, which indicates that the Maxwell equation is not applicable and the micro-structure, grain (solid matrix) or pore shape become very important to the mass transfer process for some cases.
