Low-seeded to Seedless Mandarin Orange Varieties Evaluated for Quality Characteristics in California
An increasing desire for seedless, flavorful, and easy-to-peel mandarin oranges fuels the need for new high quality cultivars that fill specific harvest and market gaps. Varieties that have not been grown commercially in California come primarily from three major sources; introduction from outside California, breeding within California, and selection within California. Our research program, funded by the California Citrus Research Board provides early information about fruit quality traits of new varieties and their performance in the citrus production areas of California. Approximately 40 new citrus varieties are evaluated each year for up to 5 years from multiple locations. New varieties are evaluated for fruit quality traits including fruit width, length, weight, rind color, texture, and thickness, flesh color, juice color, and juice weight which can be used to calculate juice percentage, seediness, soluble solids, and titratable acidity to determine acidity percentage which is used to calculate the solids-to-acid ratio as one standard for legal maturity of mandarins in California. Based on results over the past 12 years, seven mid and late-season mandarin and mandarin hybrid varieties produce fruit with promising fruit quality traits. Six of these varieties, Gold Nugget , * Shasta Gold? , Tahoe Gold? , Yosemite Gold? , Pixie , and Tango mandarins are products of the UCR Citrus Breeding Program. The seventh variety W. Murcott Afourer was introduced into California in 1985. A summary of the comparison of multiple years of fruit quality evaluations of these varieties from the Riverside location is presented.
