Assessing Yield and Fruit Quality Characteristics of Some Domestic and Foreign Originated Nucellar Blood Orange Clones in Adana Province

In this study, second level selection lines of nucellar clones which were obtained from trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) by controlled pollination of important blood orange varieties were used. These lines were planted to the research plot during 1975 to 1980. These genotypes were examined for 22 pomological and 4 plant characteristics. Fruits were harvested at optimal maturation stage and yield/tree rates were calculated individually. Varieties of 8 nucellar blood oranges, which were named as Portakal Kan (P-25) , Moro (A-14) , Sanguinello, Sanguigino, Succary (blood), Sanguinello Sample, Sanguino (blood) and Di Giaponne (slightly blood) were evaluated in terms of their yield and fruit quality characteristics. Most of the countries have established new orchards by using selected nucellar lines, which were free of virus infections. Because of rarely contamination of citrus seeds by citrus viruses, desirable root-stock combinations were obtained by using nucellar scion lines. Due to the elimination of virus diseases in fast growing nucellar lines, these embryo originated nucellar lines are very important to develop new lines. In addition, using of nucellar grafting bud has an advantage of to yield increases. Nucellar lines provide more yield and long living citrus plants, because of these lines healthier and stronger than others. In this study, differences of yields and fruit qualities of various nucellar blood orange lines were investigated to obtain most adaptable and high quality nucellar lines for Adana region. As a result, among the all nucellar blood orange lines used, those of Sanguinello and Sanguinello Semple lines were found to be most promising clones for all the characteristics tested for Adana region. In this study, also it was found that fruits of some blood oranges had higher colored flesh and denser rind color due to L-2 layer mutations when compared to original parents.
