Comparison of Pollen Tube Growth in Style and Fruit Setting under Self-and Cross-pollination of DianjiangbaiyouPomelo
Fruit setting percentages of Dianjiangbaiyou pomelo (Citrus grandis cv.)were investigated after crossed with Guanximiyou pomelo (C. grandis cv.)and Shatinyou pomelo (C. grandis cv.)and the pollen tube growth in style was observed by fluorescence microscope. The results also showed the fruit setting percentage of Dianjiangbaiyou pomelo was only 0.13% by selfpollination, much lower than 16.5% and 25.0% after cross-pollinated with Guanximiyou pomelo and Shatinyu pomelo, respectively. Selfing and crossing pollen grains on stigma germinated normally, but most of the pollen tubes of self-pollination only grew into two fifths of the upper style, and no pollen tube was observed to have reached to the style bottom, while pollen tubes pollinated by Guanximiyou and Shatinyu could get into the ovule and prepared for the next fertilization after 7 days. The results showed that Dianjiangbaiyou pomelo was self-incompatibility.
