Identification and Utilization of Ziyang Xiangcheng (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka)

The studies on botanical and biological characteristics as well as cytology of local citrus variety Ziyang Xiangcheng (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka) and the application effects of rootstock were carried out for many years. This variety is a natural hybrid of Citrus ichangensis Swingle X Citrus riticulata Blanco. It has moderate growth vigor, and the leaves are narrow and long with wide and long winged petioles. The fruit is small (average 66g of weight) and shape in oblate, with little rough and orange color peel. There are 9 to 10 segments, and sour and slightly bitter taste. The number of seeds is from 24 to 33 per fruit, and the seed is larger and polyembryonic with white cotyledon. The chromosome number of the variety is identified to be 2n=18. The seedlings could blossom and set fruits after 4 years of planting. The variety has been used for rootstock in our experiments for Tarocco orange, tangor, lemon, navel orange and Clementine. The result shows that the scion plants have got earlybearing period (3 years after planting) and high productivity with bigger fruits on the rootstock of Ziyang Xiangcheng. The growth vigor and resistance for alkali soil of the variety was significantly stronger than that of Poncirus triforliata in the purple alkaline soil (pH 7.2-8.4) in Sichuan basin.
