Breeding of New Early-maturing Variety ZhongyanzaoPonkan (Citrus reticulata)

Zhongyanzao Ponkan, originated from a bud mutant of Ota Ponkan (Japanese variety) at the orchard of Nidu mountain, Qingshen County, Sichuan in 1996, was top grafted and observed in 1997 -1998, and was identified at several locations region trials since 2001. It passed the evaluation taken charge by the provincial fruit & tea variety special committee in 2005 and was approved and released by the Sichuan Province Crop Variety Approval Committee in 2007. This variety had the excellent characteristics such as large-sized fruit, very early maturing period, few seeds, good quality. The fruit had an average weight of 220.97 g with orange color peel, 0.43 cm of peel thickness and 0. 84 of fruit shape index, and had a content of TSS 11％ , and 8. 86 g, 0.56 g and 31.71 mg of total sugar, acid and Vitamin C of 31.71 per 100ml juice, respectively. The juice rate, edible rate and seeds number were 67.68％, 77. 18％ and 4. 40/fruit, respectively. Zhongyanzao Ponkan were early fruited and productive. The fruit was ripening at the early to middle of Nov. With good characteristics for storage. At present, Zhongyanzao Ponkan is being spread in Sichuan province and the domestic parts of China.
