Breeding of Sweet Orange Variety Xingguotiancheng 3-5

The germplasm resources of sweet orange Citrus sinensis (L.)Osbeck in Xingguo are abundant. However, these germplasm have been multiplied mainly using the seedling for a long time and most of them produce fruits with poor quality. The fruit often contain many seeds and taste sour. The proportion of extracted juice from the fruit is low. The following characteristics are included in the goals of breeding new sweet orange variety: appropriate degree of sour and sweet, palatable, relatively strong fragrance, few seeds, high edible percentage, high rate of extracted juice, early maturing, high-yielding and high resistance. The breeding of Xingguo sweet orange started in 1970s. After more than 20 years breeding, a new orange variety, named Xingguotiancheng (Xingguo sweet orange) 3-5, was successfully developed. This is a dual-purpose variety, i. e. , it can be used as juice production as well as food directly. Xingguotiancheng 3-5 has passed the examination of a group of experts organized by the Department of Science and Technology of Jiangxi Province. This variety is popularized in southern Jiangxi and other orange production areas.
