Diagnosis of Nitrogen Nutrition of Satsuma Mandarin Trees for Stable Production of Tasty Fruits Using a Portable NIR Spectrophotometer
The basic experiment using a near-infrared spectrophotometer (Foss NIRSystems 6500, USA) for laboratories showed that the nitrogen content in a leaf could be predicted with sufficient accuracy from the second derivative spectrum (1 600 - 2 300nm) of a fresh green leaf. Further on, portable nearinfrared spectrophotometer which can be used in a production site was developed. Using this portable NIR spectrophotometer (NOA2000, Japan) , calibration equations of leaf nitrogen measured by Kjeldahl method and CN-coder as reference methods were developed. The rapid measurement by this instrument that takes 8 seconds for a sample showed clearly that there are seasonal and annual changes in nitrogen content measured by both methods. The correlation between these nitrogen contents and the fruit quality and yield of each tree was analyzed. Then, the diagnostic criteria for nitrogen nutrition aiming at stable production of tasty fruits were established.
