Extraction, Evaluation and Application of Sewage Sludge Organic Nutrients to Citrus Crop Fertilization

Today, sewage sludge production and the elimination of sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants are growing problems. Energy assessment like agricultural use can contribute to the solution. In this work, we present the results of a study to determine the nutritional potential of the nutrients extracted from sewage sludge as a Citrus crop fertilizer. Liquid extractions have been characterized and used in hydroponic cultures of two different citrus rootstocks (Carrizo citrange and Cleopatra mandarin). Growth and nutrition have been compared. Results show that the nutritional requirements of Citrus plants could be fulfilled usingliquid Sludge extracts (LSE). Furthermore, no toxic effect of Cl- and Na+ from sludge was noted on Citrus plants. Therefore, sludge is presented as a possible alternative fertilizer for Citrus plants.
