Effects of Pot Cultivation on Photosynthesis and Chlorophyll Fluoresce Characteristics in Leaves of Citrus

The effects of root restriction on the photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were studied in Tiancao (Citrus sinensis X Citrus unshiu Marcov)×Citrus reticulate cultivated in pots with different sizes and in field. The results showed that the net photosynthesis rate (Pn) , stomatal conductance (G,) , intercellular CO2 concentration (C1)and transpiration rate (Tr) remained unchanged in large-pot-cultivated plants as compared to those in field at different photosynthetic photo flux density. However, Pn, G, and Tr in small-pot-cultivated plants decreased significantly, while C1 was unchanged. The capacity for CO2 utilization was reduced only at high concentration in large-pot cultivated plants, but it was significantly declined at all CO2 concentration in small-potcultivated plants in comparison with the control. Maximal efficiency of PS II photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective PS II quantum yield (<ΦPSII), electron transport rate (ETR) and photochemical quenching (qP) as well as non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) hardly showed significant difference except that excitation energy capture efficiency of PS II reaction centers (FV/Fm) decreased prominently in large pot-cultivated plants as compared with that in the field. However, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, qP and ETR decreased and NPQ increased markedly in the plants cultivated in small pots. The results also showed that contents of Chl and soluble protein declined significantly in small-pot-cultivated plants, but remained stable in large-pot-cultivated plants. It indicated that small pot cultivation led to more rapid senescence in citrus leaves, which might be the reason for the declined photosynthetic capacity in small-pot-cultivated plant.
