Effects of Regulated Deficit Irrigation on Clementina de Nules and Navel Lane Late Citrus Trees: Growth,Yield and Fruit Quality
An experiment on Regulated Deficit Irrigation (RDI) was performed during 2007 in commercial orchards of drip-irrigated Clementina de Nules and Navel Lane Late planted in 2000 on Carrizo Citrange at 6 by 4 m in Iiria and Chulilla, respectively (Valencia, Spain). Treatments consisted of a Control, irrigated during the whole year at 100％ of estimated crop evapotranspiration and two RDI treatments, where irrigation was reduced at different levels after June drop during July and August. Based on our previous research in Clementina de Nules (Ginestar and Castel, 1996; Gonz lez-Altozano and Castel, 1999) threshold values of midday stem water potential (ψstem md) of - 1. 3 MPa for RDI - 1 and of - 1. 5 MPa for RDI -2 were established. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with four replicates of 5 - 10 sampling trees. The effects of the treatments on yield, fruit quality and vegetative growth are discussed in relation to tree water status. Results show important differences of sensitivity to water stress between cultivars. Thus, in Clementina RDI treatments during July and August allowed seasonal water savings of 20％ without affecting yield or its components, nor fruit quality. However, Lane Late appears more sensitive to water stress as indicated by the fact that a reduction of 30％ in seasonal water application in RDI - 1 significantly decreased yield by about 15％ through reduced fruit size, and RDI -2, which allowed a seasonal water saving of 38％ , reduced yield by an additional 3％ also through smaller fruit size, an effect that decreased their commercial price. Fruit quality (Brix, Total Acidity) in RDI treatments of both cultivars was equal or superior that in the control. RDI reduced seasonal trunk growth by 15％ -27％ in both cultivars.
