Citrus GlobalGAP Certification in Pakistan
GAP is acronym of good agriculture practices, GlobalGAP (previously known as EuroGAP) began the late in 1990s as common standards of farm management created by the representative of several European supermarkets chains with inputs from major suppliers. The standard was developed using the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) guideline by the United Nations food agriculture organization (FAO). Citrus is among the main fruit produced and exported from Pakistan. Current production is more than 2 million tons per annum. Punjab province, Sargodha districts, alone contributed as much as 60% of the total Kinnow production in the country. If Pakistan wants to improve its yield and produce fruit of better quality, it will have to adopt the good agriculture practices and international standards demanded of international imports. The annual export of the Kinnow fruit from Pakistan has steadily increased over time. Last year it reached the record level of 200000 tons. However, per unit price of Pakistan Kinnows in international markets is low because exporters are mainly directed towards low price markets. The problem is compounded by the food safety concern leading to stringent quarantine measures, traceability and demand for the EuroGAP certification. Good agriculture practices in citrus enhance the fruit quality and traceability from farm to fork. The comprehensive documentation of the system is organized with a set of complementary elements. The user can select applicable elements for each block to create a tailor-made, user-friendly manual; this selection gives the direction to all relevant stages of the GlobalGAP certification process. For agro-food products, phytosanitary (SPS) standards govern international trade to address the food safety and agriculture health risks associated with pests (fruit flies) , food borne and zoo-notic contamination, mycotoxins and pesticides. These standards tend to blend food safety, environmental and social parameters. For the 1 time in Pakistan GlobalGAP standards were applied on citrus in the Bhalwal district of Sargodha and comprised 14 produce marketing organizations (PMO) as a corporate farming module. These PMOs had over 265 orchardist registered with 13714 haacres of Kinnow mandarin for the execution of GlobalGAP practices at their farms.
