Effects of Organic Treatments on the Storage and Use of Sour Orange Seeds

Five commercial products, at different doses, were applied to control pathogenic and spoilage micro-organisms during storage of Sour orange seeds: Equiseto (Equisetum arvense), Chitosan (ground crab shells extract) , Quillaja (Quillaja saponaria) , Clonotri (a commercial mix of Trichoderma harzianum and Clonostachys rosea) and copper. The organic products were applied alone and in combination with a thermotherapy pre-treatment. Seeds were stored at 4℃ for four months and monthly tested for viability, development of albinism and pathogenic and spoilage micro-organisms. After the storage period, the highest viability was observed in seeds treated with Equiseto, Clonotri and copper. Seed viability rate was 5% -10% lower when thermotherapy was applied. Thermotherapy in combination with copper was the most effective method to reduce mold development, ensuring a germination rate over 90%.
