Use of Plant Growth Regulators and Rootstock Girdling to Improve Scion Budbreak and Reduce Sprouting of Citrus Nursery Trees

Scion budbreak is an important index for citrus nursery tree production, with any failure substantially increasing production costs. Scion growth can also be severely affected by rootstock sprouting. This work was divided in three trials. In the first trial, α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) application was evaluated on budbreak, scion growth and rootstock sprouting of Natal sweet orange Citrus sinensis (L.)Osbeck budded on Swingle citrumelo (Poncirus trifoliata Raf. X Citrus paradisi Macf. ). NAA was sprayed at 0, 100 and 1 000mg/L in two different moments; just after rootstock bending and 12 days later, just before unwrapping. In the second trial, gibberellic acid (GA3) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) application was evaluated on budbreak and length of Hamlin sweet orange budded on Swingle citrumelo. GA3 and IAA were applied on bud eyes at 0, 100, 500 and 1 000mg/L 12 days after budding. In the last trial, seven girdling methods were evaluated on budbreak and length of Valencia sweet orange budded on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck). Girdling was proceeded 20 days after budding. Although scion budbreak was not affected by NAA application, rootstock sprouting was significantly reduced by NAA at 1 000mg/L. On the other hand, this concentration led to shorter scions. NAA application 12 days after bending and just before unwrapping decreased sprouting and also led to higher scions. GA3 at any concentration reduced budbreak 30 days after budding, but IAA only affected budbreak at 1 000mg/L. Scion length was not influenced by the use of these plant regulators. Thirty days after budding, rootstock girdling at 2cm above scion bud eye with a single 1-cm cut accelerated budbreak comparing to complete girdling of all rootstock trunk perimeter, above or below bud eye. Scion length was reduced with rootstock girdling at 2cm above bud eye with all trunk perimeter girdled.
