Initial Growth of Transplanted Citrus Nursery Trees Classified by Scion Trunk Diameter
Transplant performance is directly related to nursery tree quality. Usually vigorous and well developed individuals are reported as more appropriate transplants which will perform better for several months after transplantation. Morphological attributes, such as trunk diameter, can be easily used as vigor parameter in nurseries, leading to different plant classifications. The initial growth of citrus nursery trees classified by scion trunk diameter was evaluated after transplant in the field. One-year-old containerized Hamlin sweet orange Citrus sinensis (L.)Osbeck nursery trees budded on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) was transplanted in March 2006 in Tambau, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Plant spacing was 7m x3m, with no irrigation. In the nursery, trees were previously grouped in the following scion trunk diameter classes (mm): 7.2-8.2 (I) , 8.3-9.2 (II), 9. 3 - 10. 2 (III), 10.3-11.2 (IV) and 11.3-12.2 (V). Diameter was measured at 5 cm above bud union. Data collected was plant height (m) , rootstock and scion trunk diameter (cm) , rootstock and scion trunk diameter relation, and plant vigor grade based on a scale varying from 1. 0 (very unsatisfactory plant vigor) to 5. 0 (excellent plant vigor). Twelve months after transplant, there were no differences among trees regarding plant height or rootstock and scion trunk diameter. However, class V plants (11. 3 - 12. 2mm) had a lower rootstock scion trunk relation. All plants had satisfactory vigor in the field. Scion trunk diameter may not be used as an adequate quality index for citrus nursery tree performance.
