Identification of Phytophthora spp. in Syrian Citrus Groves
The aim of the present work was to monitor Phytophthora spp. in the soils and roots of citrus groves in the main Syrian growing areas, i. e. Lattakia and Tartous. Selective medium with soil dilution plating and molecular (PGR) assays were used for pathogen detection. Phytophthora spp. was identified in 38.5% of the collected samples. With the use of genus-specific primers, Ph2-ITS4, and species-specific primers, Pn5b-Pn6 and Pc2b-Pc7, isolates were used to unambiguously identify P. nicotianae and P. citrophthora. In both locations, P. citrophthora was the predominant species. The molecular tool, PCR, was used to confirm the morphological identification for the species of Phytophthora causing root rot in Syrian citriculture.
