Production and Use of Sanitarily Improved Citrus Native Genotypes in Egypt

A programme for the production of true-totype and virus-free propagating material of citrus has been implemented by the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) over the last ten years. About 60 candidate clones, mainly of sweet orange, lime and mandarin, were selected in commercial citrus groves and in variety collections following a pomological and sanitary selection scheme. After the field selection, candidate clones were analyzed by serological, molecular and biological means for the assessment of their good sanitary status. The most promising selections were also recovered either by the use of shoot-tipgrafting (combined or not with thermotherapy) or by stigma/style somatic embryogenesis. The healthy plants were maintained under insect-proof screenhouse and submitted to trueness-to-type controls before entering the certification programme. A pilot nursery was set up under insect-proof and plastic tunnels, fulfilling sanitary requirements, in order to maintain mother trees in pots, establish increase budwood blocks and produce healthy citrus plants.
