Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), Incidence and Control in Cuban Citriculture

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama which was found in Cuba in 1999, is present nowadays in citrus areas of Pinar del Rio, La Habana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Camaguey, Ciego deAvila, Holguln and Santiago de Cuba. The behaviour of D. citri and its natural enemies was studied in Valencia orange and Marsh grapefruit from different citrus areas. New shoot corresponding to cardinal points were collected weekly. The presence and stages of natural enemies were quantified. Plants near the citrus plantations and nurseries, on gardens and yards were monitored to investigate the hosts of D. citri. The predators Cycloneda sanguined (L) , Chilocorus cacti (L), Exochomus cubensis Dimn, Scymnus distinctus Casey, Chrysopa sp. and Ocyptamus sp. , the parasitoid Tamarixia radiata Waterston and the fungus Hirsutella citriformis Speare were identified as natural enemies. The adults remain in mature leaves and branches, without reproductive activity until the beginning of the new budding and oviposite in shoots smaller than 2mm. The developing stages of D. citri tend to distribute in an aggregated way. The population peaks of the psyllid were observed in the new buds, with preference for the upper leaf surface and not cardinal points. T. radiata, widely distributed in the country, has an important function in the control of D. citri, with parasitism of 30% , 72% and 97.26% for nymphs N3, N4 and N5. E. cubensis predate 33. 3% to 41.46% eggs and up to 40% Nl nymphs. Greater distribution of the parasitoid was determined in the South of the tree, the upper leaf surface and the shoots. All stages of D. citri as well as its natural enemies complete their life circle in Triphasia trifolia (Burm. ).
