The Primary Investigation of Thrips in Citrus Orchards in Middle Reaches of Yangtze River
Thrips are an important pest insect of citrus fruit in Yangtze River catchment in recent years. In this paper, we collected thrips from three spots in Yichang and one spot in Wuhan. According to the primary investigation, five species of thrips were found in flowers in Wuhan citrus orchards, they are citrus thrips (Scirtothrips dtri), yellow tea thrips (Scirtothips dorsalis Hood) , flower thrips (Frankliniella intosa) , sixspotted thrips (Scolothrips takahashii) and Haplothrips chinensis Priesner. In Yichang, only two species are found in citrus flowers. They are S. citri and 5. dorsalis Hood. About 34% of these are S. dorsalis Hood, 51% are F. intosa, and the S. citri account for about 10%. Only about 5% are H. chinensis Priesner. Based on investigation data, in Yangtze River catchment, thrips could produce one to a dozen generations during one year if the weather is favorable. The first and second generations are usually well defined, but the succeeding generations overlap. The S. citri and S. dorsalis Hood could occur from late March or April to October. They can produce 7 to 8 generations. The F. intosa could produce about 11 to 14 generations in one year, while the H. chinensis Priesner could produce about 8 generations.
