Do Citrus Growers Benefit from Participating in Cooperatives?Evidence from China
Economic globalization and industrialization have caused financial, technical, and marketing hardships among citrus growers in the developing countries. A large number of researchers strongly believe that cooperatives are the best way to help the citrus farmers to go through these hardships. Based on a household-level survey, this paper analyses the potential change of farmers welfare level in China, if they participate in cooperatives. The results show that higher welfare level can be achieved with additional entry cost. In addition, technical, financial and marketing economies of scale contribute to the increase of the welfare level, while the influence of industry and traditional institutions is not positive. Therefore, citrus growers may benefit form participating in cooperatives if the influence from industry and traditional institutions is controlled. Peasant systematization may be a good way to promote the economic development in rural areas in the developing countries and regions.
