Current Framework and Prospects of Citrus Fruit Trade in Italy, the Role of Producers Organisations

In the current economic scenario, citrus productions face a highly competitive market in which the quality of the product is an essential and necessary instrument so that they can successfully establish and corner high market shares. The products, with certification of quality and origin to guarantee the safety requirements and the link with the production territory for added value, are taking increasing importance in the consumption markets. Therefore, there is a need for effective tools for better positioning citrus fruit in national and international markets (in particular, in the largescale retail system) , and for better organizing the trade system. In this general framework the citrus commercialization enterprises (separate in the two major types, Producers Organizations and Commercial Enterprises) have an important role, especially in Italy, between the commercial function and the relative market at source. In recent years, the difficulties in marketing are increased insomuch as to generate a gradual decommissioning of the manufacture commercial processes and to bring about pull-out activity. The work, presented in this paper will focus on knowledge of the structural and organizational characteristics of Producers Organizations, which intercept and trade most of the citrus fruit of Italian origin.
