Environmental Considerations for Sustainable Hydropower Development in the Mekong Region-a Joint ADB, MRC and WWF Initiative
Good morning. Thank you very much. I want to just present a little bit about hydropower development in the Mekong context, in relationship to integrated water resource management. I think first of all, Id like to recognize the contributions to this paper by my colleges, in particular Mr. Vorade-th, who is here with us today, who is program manager for the hydropower program, but also to recognize that much of the, many of the challenges that we are now facing in the Mekong region and have already been experienced and addressed by some of the river basins we have heard about in the last couple of days. Here, I think we have many lessons from China, from the Rhine, from Itaipu, from the US, which we can adapt and apply in Mekong basin. This title is a little bit different to what was on the published program. The specific aspects of the environmental considerations for sustainable hydropower development, I will cover in the session this afternoon, in session 3, one of the parallel sessions.
