Hydropower and Environmental Protection-Improved Fish Passage can Contribute to a Better Protection of the Living Aquatic Resources in the Yangtze River
Human activities have left their imprints on streams and rivers for thousands of years. As a consequence of industrialization and human population growth, the pressure on natural watercourses and their aquatic habitats has intensified through history and the degradation of the aquatic habitats has accelerated—with negative consequences for the aquatic species and therefore also for fisheries. Currently, nearly all watercourses in developed countries have been adversely affected by anthropogenic activities to various degrees and inland water habitats in many developing countries are following the same route.
