Groundwater Replenishment as an Early Indicator for the River Flow Rate, Flood and Low Water Flow Control by Dams
The Inter - district Institution in charge of the Grands Lacs de Seine is in charge of managing the 4 major reservoirs on the Seine river and 3 tributaries used for the flood protection of Paris city and suburbs, and to support the low water flow in the river. The Seine tributaries are crossing large areas of thick pervious chalk formations, and more pervious limestone formations, which respective saturation rate and aquifer water table may vary on a wide amplitude. It is possible to compute the aquifer contribution to the river flow rate, sometimes several weeks in advance, and thus give life time indications to the dam manager for a more adapted management scheme than following a unique curve year after year. A cluster of lumped models was used for the low water forecasting, thus giving indications to possibly accelerate (or slow down) the releases from the dam.
