Ecological and Environmental Protection in the Three Gorges Project
The Three Gorges Project is the key in Chinas plans to control and harness the Yangtze River. Ecological and environmental protection surrounding the project is a focus of world attention. Prior to the construction of the project, there was a prolonged scientific debate. Now in operation, it has been demonstrated that adverse influences of the Three Gorges project on the local ecology and environment have been able to be kept within predicted parameters and that negative effects have been controlled. Moreover, the project has already begun to show some of its considerable ecological and environmental benefits. The Three Gorges Project is the key in Chinas plans to control and harness the Yangtze River. The project will bring immense integrated benefits in flood control, power generation and shipping alike, and is thus of considerable importance to sustainable social and economic development in the Yangtze River basin. However, due to the sheer complexity and magnitude of the project as well as the multitude of factors involved, its potential ecological and environmental impacts have received worldwide attention.
