Biot’s Consolidation Due to Shear Loads Distributed over a Finite Two-dimensional Porous Media
Biot’s consolidation caused by shear loads within a finite two-dimensional area was studied by numerical simulation in this paper. The results show that, among the displacements due to shear loads, the horizontal displacement is predominant, while the vertical displacement does occur. This is a perfect reflection of the consolidation process being a flowdeformation coupling. The long-term subsidence is dependent on shear loads and soil properties, but independent of boundary conditions. Although there is no effect of boundary conditions upon the steadystate settlement, yet the consolidation and settlement process corresponding to various boundary conditions differs from each other.
