Stability of Bank Slope Under Reservoir Water Drawdown
Changing reservoir level is one of the most important factors causing a slope failure of banks. This paper introduces a series of analyses of transient groundwater flows in a soil embankment under reservoir water level fluctuations and analyses of the stability of the embankment in the Three Gorges reservoir area of the Yangtze River. The analysis results demonstrate that the change of phreatic line dependant on the permeability during the drawdown process;the safety factor of slope with high permeability is larger than that of slope with low permeability. At the same time, permeability anisotropy is also a factor that influence the safety factor. These analyses provide basis for slope stability analysis and optimization of the slope design in the Three Gorges reservoir area.
