Simplified 3D Finite-element Analysis on Soft Foundation Improved by Vacuum Preloading

According to the deformation characteristics of large area soft foundation improved by vacuum preloading, the simplified method considering the smear effects of sand drains was adopted, and the influence induced by the size of element on the calculational consolidation degree was discussed, then the appropriate meshing-element method was introduced. A finite-element program (ADINA v.8.3) coupled with Biot consolidation theory was employed to simulate 3D multidrain analysis, which considered the coupling between seepage and deformation and the soil as the porous media, then the numerical predictions were compared with the field data. It is found that the predictions obtained with the simplified method agree well with the field observations, and much caiculational workload is saved, which can also provides an acceptable accuracy for multidrain system analysis
