The Safety Policies in Uranium Mining Research in Some Western Countries
Nuclear power is the No.1 selective in a clean energy future, but uranium mining has to be safer and more environmentally responsible. In some western countries such as Canada and Australia, uranium mining is strictly controlled. Before mine commence, there is a feasibility study in which stakeholders participate essentially. Mining operations are undertaken under relevant national health and radiation protection codes of practice. These set strict health standards for exposure to gamma radiation and raden gas. Environmental management systems sound good, in Australia and Canada, major uranium mining companies either have or are close to having ISO 14001 certification. At the end of mine operation, rehabilitation programs must be implemented. Money for this purpose can come from internal fund and external fund.
