New catalysts for sustainable routes for biodiesel components from lignocellulosic biowastes

Notwithstanding the large current research activity catalysis for biofuels 1, still limited attention has been put on the sustainability of the production processes. The passage from the 1st to the 2nd generation processes to use resources not competitive with food production is a relevant issue, by using for example the large resources of lignocellulosic biowastes, but we should remark the need to develop better routes which avoid very energy-intensive processes (such as in many currently used pretreatments) or of environmentally unfriendly solvents (such as in organosolvents processes or using ionic liquids), or which may generate very large volumes of aqueous wastes and CO2 emissions such as in enzymatic processes.
