Selective syngas conversion to ethanol over a nanosized NiMoS2 catalyst

Introduction Ethanol is being considered as a potential alternative synthetic fuel for automobiles and source of hydrogen for fuel cells. Recently, the catalytic conversion of syngas to ethanol has attracted increased attention. Rh-based catalyst demonstrated high selectivity to ethanol and reasonably good syngas conversion, however, extremely expensive Rh metal with limited supply makes it unfavorable candidate for industrial conversion of syngas to ethanol. In this article, effort has been made to develop an efficient nanosized NiMoS2/clay catalyst with good performance in terms of syngas conversion and selectivity to ethanol. Highly dispersed multi-transition metal nanoparticles have been produced within exfoliated silicate framework via a one-pot synthesis approach.
