Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: Effect of promoter type on alumina-supported Mo carbide catalysts

Introduction The depletion of petroleum resources and environmental concerns has motivated interest in advanced technologies for clean fuels production. Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is considered one of the most promising alternatives for non-oil based GTL fuel processes. Although commercial FTS depends on Fe and Co-based catalysts, Mo carbide is the focus of this investigation due to its sulfur-tolerance, better resistance to carbon deposition and potential for high olefin selectivity. In particular, the FT performance of promoted-Mo carbide catalyst system has been chosen in order to enhance chain growth. MoC1-x is typically produced via temperature-programmed carburization with H2/light alkane mixture. The objective of the study was to determine the influence of promoter character and concentration on key FT metrics for the MoC1-x/Al2O3 catalyst with K, Na, Co and Ce as promoters.
