Preparation and Photocatalytic Activity of Mn,N-Co-doped TiO2 with Visible Light Response

Introduction Although TiO2 has many advantages such as high photocatalytic activity, non-toxicity, and cheapness, the large scale application of TiO2 is hampered by the fact that it absorbs only the very small ultraviolet part of solar light due to its wide band-gap (3.2eV for anatase) 1. One of the effective approaches to extend the optical response of TiO2 from ultraviolet to visible light range is the doping of TiO2 with nonmetal atoms and transition metal elements 2,3. In this work, Mn,N-co-doped TiO2 photocatalysts with visible-light response were prepared by a sol-gel synthesis method. The structural and photoelectric properties of such photocatalysts were characterized and the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol were used as model reactions to evaluate the activity of the prepared photocatalysts under visible light irradiation.
