Hydrodechlorination of chloropentafuoroethane over Pd/AlF3 catalysts

Introduction The catalytic hydrodechlorination of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) has attracted great attention, because it represents an HF-free route for the conversion of CFCs into hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are the desirable substitutes for the ozone depleting CFCs. Chloropentafuoroethane (CF3CF2Cl, CFC-115) has been mainly used as refrigerant, the favored replacement for which is CF3CF2H (HFC-125). Thus, it is urgent to develop a catalytic process for the hydrodechlorination of CFC-115 into HFC-125 over highly efficient catalysts. Palladium supported on carbon or AlF3 seems to be optimal catalysts for this hydrodechlorination. Compared with Pd/C, Pd/AlF3 catalysts exhibit a superior selectivity for HFCs with a higher catalyst stability. However, its activity is generally low, probably own to the low surface area of support, leading to low Pd dispersion. In order to enhance their activities, the support AlF3 with high surface area is prepared. In the current study the hydrodechlorination of CFC-115 into HFC-125 over Pd/AlF3 catalysts is investigated in detail.
