Alkylation of phenol with tert-butyl alcohol over SO3-H functional ionic liquid catalyst

Introduction Butylated phenol is a very important industrial product used as antioxidant additive in jet fuel, bio-diesel, phenolic resin, also in fine chemicals and agrochemicals production. Mixtures of 2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol (75 wt % minimum) 2,4,6-tri-tert-butyl phenol and other tert-butyl phenols are used as antioxidants for motor and industrial oils, aviation turbine fuel and also chemical intermediate for manufacture of antioxidants, surface active agents. Both Lewis and Bronsted acid catalysts are used in industrial manufacture of butylated phenols. Heterogeneous catalysts like zeolites, cation-exchanged resins and mesoporous materials for tert-butylation of phenol were investigated by many researchers 1-3. In the present work, we report the kinetics of an efficient and environmentally benign catalyst for tert-butylation of phenol using tert-butyl alcohol as the alkylating agent.
