The Cortical Functional Organizations for Illusory and Kinetic Contour Processing across V1, V2 and V4 of Macaque Ventral Pathway

The abiding challenge in neuroscience is to provide a decisive description that links behavior and perception to brain mechanisms. Visual Illusions and Second Order Visual Stimulus have proven to be a fruitful strategy to investigate the constructive nature of vision, which dramatically reveals the dissociation between the retinal input and the percept. However the cortical neuronal substrates underlying these illusory contours have been surprisingly difficult to localize in visual pathway. With custom built in vivo Dual Optical Imaging rig, the extrastriate cortices of V4 and V2 as well as the primary visual cortex (V1) have been charted to the stimuli of the abutting line illusory contours (ICs) and kinetic contours (KCs) defined by the second order motion respectively.
